Objectives
After completing this lesson, students will be able to work with political cartoons and:

  1. build historical knowledge of the 1898 War and American perceptions of the Caribbean landscapes and peoples
  2. recognize how this period was shaped by this medium
  3. embrace the complexity and ambiguity of working with primary sources
  4. use a variety of sources (primary and secondary) to decode political cartoons
  5. conduct re-readings of political cartoons as new evidence is presented
